Primitivo is one of Italy’s most iconic red grape varieties, deeply rooted in the sun-soaked vineyards of Southern Italy. While it is cultivated in numerous regions, its true home is Puglia (Apulia) and most famously in Manduria, where Primitivo di Manduria DOC wines rank among Italy’s most powerful and expressive reds. Primitivo produces deep ruby red wines with aromas of ripe blackberries, cherries, and warm spices. On the palate, it is bold, full-bodied, and smooth, with firm tannins, velvety texture, and a long, persistent finish. Its naturally high sugar content contributes to both elevated alcohol and a rich, concentrated style, making it one of the most distinctive and celebrated Italian red wines.
